"Chinese is the native language of more than 1.2 billion people, principally in China, but also in ethnic Chinese communities worldwide.  All dialects of Chinese are written in essentially the same way, using Chinese characters (hanzi), . . .  Major dialects include Mandarin, also known as guoyu ("national language") . . .  Chinese is also an official language of the United Nations."  The New York Times Guide to Essential Knowledge, Elizabeth Publishing, 2007, Page 1038.

TEACHER PROFILE:  Eva Hsia-Elwell

I am bi-lingual and bi-cultural, English and Chinese.  I was born in Taiwan, SE Asia, and Chinese is my native language.  I came to the U.S. in 1985 to further my college education.  I have a B.A. in accounting from Central Missouri State University.  I studied English in Taiwan from the 7th grade on, and passed the “Test of English as a Foreign Language” (TOEFL) when applying to the American University.

I currently enjoy teaching Chinese to middle and high school students at The World Language House.  Previously, I taught Chinese for more than ten years to preschool through high school students at the Tri-City Chinese Language School.  I tutor adults and after-school students who need help with their Chinese homework.

I sharpen my teaching skills by attending the annual Chinese Teacher’s seminar and workshop in Seattle.  Because of the increasing business relationship between the United
States and China, learning Chinese is becoming more and more important each year.  I very much enjoy teaching and sharing the Chinese culture, history, and language with my students.
