TEACHER PROFILE:  Karen Glaesemann, B.S. Chemistry, American Chemical Society certification

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Iowa State University with American Chemical Society certification.  My graduate study was in Food Science.  After college, I worked as a college lab assistant, a technical writer and web designer, a communications consultant, and an agricultural chemist.  I have judged our Mid-Columbia Science Fair.  My education and work experience give me a broad range of resources to draw students into my appreciation of the sciences while they learn the principles.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY ~

I believe that, though knowing science is about terms and diagrams, understanding science is about magnifying our view of the world.  When my children see a new animal during a trip, we do not just learn its name, we look up its role in its ecosystem. When my daughter adds pudding to milk, we learn about the reaction between the starch and the fat.  When my son is throwing a basketball, I remind him that he needs to throw it higher because gravity is pulling it down.  We experience science all around us; we just need to look a little closer to understand what it means.
