Class Description:
I enjoy sharing my passion for French and German with students of all ages and am motivated to see them progress. I am dedicated to teaching in a relaxed and friendly environment, introducing students to all aspects of the language. This includes communicating by speaking and listening, reading and writing, and by building a good vocabulary and grammar skills. I will use a variety of methods to make learning as fun as possible, including games and interactive activities, as well as books and other media where appropriate.
I plan to continue using the same French textbook in the coming year; French Is Fun to be suitable for literate beginners in many age groups. There is also a smaller workbook which accompanies the textbook and serves as a follow-up to the material learned in class, by way of further exercises. This is used primarily for written homework.
French Is Fun is quite large and will last for two years when used for two hours a week. It presents an introduction to the language through vocabulary and grammar, with each unit focusing on a particular theme. Having completed homework, we then play a game to reinforce what was learned, followed by a test. There are also reviews after each section of the book. After each test, students look forward to French Bingo with those tricky numbers.
Although the workload will not be heavy, there will be homework to do. When studying a new language, a little must be done each day, and students will need to complete the assignments in order to keep up. Coming to class regularly and staying on track is an essential part of the program. Making time to study at home is very important.
Teacher's PROFILE: Rachel Buck
From an early age, I held an interest in foreign languages. I studied two - French and German - during my school days and on through college, with several exchange visits to Europe where I gained valuable experience learning from native host families. I earned my B.A. degree in French and German from Aston University in my native Great Britain. As a student, I spent time in Germany living with a family as their au pair, and I also taught English as a Foreign Language in a high school in France, where I had the opportunity to appear on a weekly local radio show in the same town. Throughout my childhood and on into adulthood, I was very involved with the Girl Scouts at home in the UK and later abroad in France and Germany.
